Coolbanagher is of significant historical interest and the remains of a 13th century castle tower still stand on the property. Opposite the entrance to the property is the ruin of the eighth century Coolbanagher church that was visited by Oengus the Celi De (St Aengus) towards the end of the eighth century where he saw a vision of angels. This inspired him to write his famous poem Feilire that can be seen at the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin.

The Castle Tower was part of a defensive line of towers surrounding the Rock of Dunamaise.
